Résumé :	This textbook builds upon problem solving as a teaching tool. Not only is this a logical procedure for engineers, it also provides an analytical approach to the study of materials. To implement this teaching method, approximately 150 example problems have neen included within the chapters, together with nearly 400 study problems which are placed at the ends of the chapters. It is to be hoped that the instructor will have the student use the former both as an aid to understanding the assigned home problems and also for the purpose of emphasizing new concepts which cannot be presented as effectively in prose
