Armes ABC(atomiques ou nucléaires, biologiques ou bactériologiques, et chimiques) Résumé : This is the first time a symposium focusing on the theme of chemical and biological defense has been organized as part of a ACS national meeting. The symposium brought together a large number of academic, government and industrial scientists. The work presented spanned concepts at incipient stage in the laboratory to developed systems that can be fielded in the immediate future. The book is probably the most comprehensive compilation of research being done in this field at this time.
The papers incorporated in the book cover a wide range of methods to detect chemical and biological threats and also methods to protect against them. Consequently, the book is organized into the two main categories of detection and protection. The section on detection includes various approaches including cantilever and nanotube based methods, immunological approaches, infrared and fluorescence techniques, porous nano systems, Raman scattering methods, etc. The section on protection includes approaches based on nanoparticulates and nanofibers and new barrier and reactive materials.Note de contenu : In summary :
1. Challenges for chemical and biological protection.
2. Assessment of nanotechnology for chemical biological defense.
3. Piezoelectric-excited millimeter-sized cantilever (PEMC) sensors for detecting bioterrorism agents.
4. Conducting polymer and polymer/CNT composite nanofibers by electrospinning.
5. Device structures composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

This book provides an overview of the current trends in this research field. Individual topics present the latest concepts related to material lifetime prediction methodologies, new insight into complex degradation mechanisms, and how the knowledge of their performance limiting processes can be applied to the design of materials with improved features. Appropriate analytical characterization techniques that are fundamental to all areas of polymer degradation and optimization studies and the overlapping performance interests in a range of existing and developing applications are discussed. The audience will be material engineers and polymer chemists working in academia, large research institutes and industry dealing with polymer design and development, material testing and durability assessments Note de contenu : In summary :

Génie chimique -- CongrèsIndex. décimale : 66.0 Ingénierie chimique en général Résumé : The Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division (I&EC) of the American Chemical Society celebrates the centennial of its establishment in 2008. I&EC was the first technical division established within ACS, and as part of the commemorations planned this book has been produced. The theme of the book is innovation and creativity in the chemical industry, where industrial chemists and chemical engineers have made and will make major contributions. This book provides broad coverage of several significant innovations in chemistry that have led, or will lead, to global industrial developments. The material emphasizes how basic science discoveries have been translated into practice. The book will give readers insight into the nature of developing industries from laboratory discoveries. Symposium series # 1000 not only chronicles the creativity of our industry, but also reveals the nature of discovery and innovation. There are chapters that are retrospective in nature as well as chapters that are more prospective (for example, green chemistry). The book is not just a history or commemorative, but a compendium of the nature of innovation in our field. The book covers traditional chemical and petrochemical industries, but also emerging fields ionic liquids. The book is a true resource for professionals. Note de contenu : In summary :
1. Putting science to work: a history of I&EC leadership and innovation in its first hundred years
2. Ammonia synthesis: catalyst and technologies
3. Innovation and enterprise: the industrial gases industry in the United States
4. Polyethylene: an account of scientific discovery and industrial innovations
5. The history of petroleum cracking in the 20th century
6. The history of fluidized catalytic cracking: a history of innovation from 1942 to 2008

The book focuses on a variety of environmentally problematic species from metals to halogenated organic compounds and how researchers are developing methods to degrade or sequester these species for the benefit of public health and to help ensure sustainability of precious natural resources. While nanoscale particles, especially iron particles, have been studied extensively for their potential to degrade a variety of organic compounds, microscale systems are of great importance in field application due to financial considerations and actual efficiency in the environment. In addition, other metals, including magnesium and zinc, have great potential for use in the environment in a cost-effective manner.
