The present volume on welding fundamental deals only with the basic technology of welding. The practical applications of this technology will be taken up in later volumes. The traditional first volume chapters such as physics of welding, welding metallurgy, mechanical testing, and residual stresses and distortion are of cours included, but most of the material in these chapters is new (thatis, not extracted from the previous sixth edition volume).
